The president of the United States, Donald Trump, reiterated this Wednesday his support for the Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella and assured that, if it is the winner in the second round of elections on June 21, Colombia will have “the full support and strength” of Washington.
However, this position is not new, weeks before the president had already expressed his position to choose De la Espriella.
On the other hand, The candidate, who calls himself “El Tigre,” has repeatedly expressed his affinity for the policies of Trump and other right-wing leaders in Latin America and the world.
In a message published on his Truth Social platform, Trump affirmed that De la Espriella has his “complete and unconditional support” and maintained that the outcome of the elections will be decisive for the future of bilateral relations.

“The results of these elections are crucial for the future of Colombia and its relationship with the United States, a country that, if Abelardo wins, thanks to his competence and love for his country, will have the full support and strength of the United States,” wrote the American president.
The Republican also congratulated the conservative candidate for his performance in the first round on May 31 and described him as “an intelligent, strong and tenacious leader.” Likewise, he contrasted his candidacy with that of his rival, Iván Cepeda, whom he described as “a radical left-wing Marxist,” alluding to his political closeness with President Gustavo Petro.
Trump added that, if he reaches the Casa de Nariño, De la Espriella “will have resounding success in leading Colombia to boost the economy, create jobs, promote commerce, stop illegal immigration, fight crime and drugs.”and restore public order!”, reinforcing its narrative of cooperation in matters of security and economic development.
