Guillermo Vázquez would be very close to returning to direct the UNAM Pumas after eleven years of absence as a replacement for Efrain Juarezwho this Thursday announced his departure from the feline team by not reaching an agreement with the university board for the formation of the campus.
Vázquez was the last coach who made the cats champion 15 years ago and has a similar way of thinking with the team’s vice president, Antonio Sancho, who has long been shown interest in the return of the former midfielder of the university team in the eighties and has had several periods as a strategist in the feline team.
Unofficial versions assure that Memo Vázquez is Antonio Sancho’s number one candidate and Carlos Gutiérrez, sports director, who consider that this strategist is the most appropriate option to replicate the success in the feline team.
If he returns to the helm of the Pumas, it would be his third period in the feline squad, after he had his first experience between 2010 and 2011. where precisely he obtained the last feline title.
In 2015 he returned to the technical direction of the university students, where they played the final against the Tigres and lost it, throwing overboard the dreams of the Pedregal team, which would now have a new challenge.
The closeness of Memo Vázquez with the Pumas comes from origin, since his father was a coach of the feline team and director of basic forces, being his last job as a coach within the Cruz Azul coaching staff with poor results in 2023.
Guillermo “Memo” Vázquez He has led the UNAM Pumas in two main stages as regular technical director:
First stage (2010-2012): He led the team to its seventh league title in the 2011 Clausura tournament.
Second stage (2014-2016): He qualified the team to a league final (Apertura 2015) and the Copa Libertadores.
In addition to these two periods, he had a brief interim of 5 games at the end of the Clausura 2006 tournament.
