Senator Chris Van Hollen (Maryland) took advantage of his time at Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s hearing to criticize President Donald Trump’s foreign policy.
“Well, let’s face it, Mr. Secretary, Trump’s foreign policy has become a total disaster“, launched the Democrat, who then made a list of the actions that President Trump has taken, including the war against Iran that began in January and that has caused a negative economic impact on Americans.
In fact, in the recent UnidosUS survey of Latino voters, The war with Iran emerged as a worrying element and impact on the economy of families, due to the high cost of gasoline and, therefore, other products.
Latinos express their rejection of President Trump’s military actions without authorization from Congress.
“Nearly 8 in 10 believe that the President should obtain congressional approval before taking military action against another country,” the report states. “Two-thirds of Hispanic voters (64%) oppose war in Iran“.
Van Hollen also addressed the situation with Cuba and how the Trump government imposed more restrictions that affect the population, but not the rulers.
“It prevents the entry of Cuban political refugees into the United States, even while you have imposed an almost total oil blockade on that repressive regime,” he criticized. “The stated goal is to change the government there, but the only change currently is the humanitarian crisis inflicted on millions of people, not members of the regime.”
There are reports of possible US military actions in Cuba, which the majority of Hispanics are against, with 57% rejecting them, according to UnidosUS.
The relationship with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping
Van Hollen addressed Trump’s approach to Russian President Vladimir Putinand how that can affect “Ukrainian sovereignty.”
He also spoke about Trump’s agreements with Chinastrengthened by his meeting with leader Xi Jinping.
“The president who lifted restrictions on the transfer of sophisticated American chips to China, but returned from his trip there with nothing but envy. He tweeted about it the other day,” the senator said.
Other criticisms from Van Hollen are for the relationship of President Trump’s family with the United Arab Emirates, enriching themselves with the use of the Trump name.
“We have also witnessed corrupt cryptocurrency deals with the Staunch family of the United Arab Emirates that have enriched the Trump family at the expense of our national security,” he lamented.
Criticism of Rubio for double standards on Gaza
One of the criticisms against Rubio and the policy imposed by Trump in the Middle East is the situation in Gaza.
“Speaking of Gaza, there is a supposed peace agreementmeanwhile, that Senator Rubio [cuando era senador] once proclaimed that the United States must work to ensure that refugees fleeing war, torture and persecution have safe environments to live and thrive,” said Senator Van Hollen.
The targeting of Gaza was combined with Trump’s asylum policy, which targeted white South Africans.
“Now, as Secretary of State in this administration, you have limited the number of refugees to a historic low of 17,500 and white South Africans and Afrikaners have represented approximately ninety-nine percent of those places, Mr. Secretary,” Van Hollen continued.
