Tesla was once again in the spotlight in the United Statess, although this time it was not for autonomy, autonomous driving or new technologies. The problem seems much simpler, almost absurd, but it ended up causing a recall that affects more than 14,000 units of the Mannequin Y.

The situation has to do with something as small as a label. Yeah, literally a sticker mandatory that several vehicles left the factory without having it installed correctly.

The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, known as NHTSA, confirmed the review campaign on May 22, 2026. In total, 14,575 Tesla Mannequin Y produced between November 2024 and April 2026 are involved.

The detail that generated the problem

The missing label is neither decorative nor an irrelevant piece of technical information. This is the mandatory certification that informs the maximum permitted weight of the vehicle and the correct tire specifications.

This information is normally located on the driver’s door pillar and is important to avoid overloads that could affect braking, stability or even the height of the SUV.

What is striking is that the error occurred within one of the most automated factories in the automotive industry. Tesla discovered that an automated vision system tasked with verifying the presence of the tag had been malfunctioning for months without anyone detecting it.

A failure that went unnoticed for months

According to the information revealed, the problem only came to light thanks to a handbook audit carried out by a worker on April 17, 2026.

Tesla estimates that approximately forty five% of vehicles included in the review may not have the tag installed.

After detecting the flaw, the company corrected the scanning system at the plant. Fremont and then implemented similar changes in the Austin Gigafactory. In addition, it once again incorporated manual verifications to prevent something similar from happening again.

The solution will be simple

For now, no accidents or injuries have been reported related to this problem. Even so, Tesla will carry out the review preventively in the United States.

Affected owners will begin to receive official notifications starting on July 17, 2026. The repair does not involve mechanical modifications or complex changes.

Basically, the technicians will check if the vehicle has the corresponding label and, if it is missing, they will simply install it at no cost to the customer.

The situation leaves a curious image for tesla. A company renowned for its technological development, artificial intelligence and automation ended up facing a massive recall for an extremely basic error.
