For more than three decades, the disappearance of Anna Manning remained an unsolved mystery in Kentucky. Now, researchers say they are closer than ever to finding answers.
According to local media outlet WKYT, human remains have been discovered on a property linked to Anna’s disappearance, representing significant progress in a case that dates back to 1992.
The remains were recovered from a property in Boyle County and will be transferred to a forensic laboratory for examination and identification, the Boyle County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Authorities indicated that no official identification will be made until the investigation is concluded and next of kin have been notified.
The discovery came just days after investigators arrested Anna’s husband, Anthony Manningand his mother, Barbara Manningin relation to the case.
On May 19, 2026, Detective Ray of the Boyle County Sheriff’s Office obtained formal indictments against Anthony and Barbara, according to a sheriff’s office Facebook post.
Anthony was charged with murder, tampering with evidence and desecration of a corpse. Barbara was charged with complicity in murder, complicity in tampering with evidence and complicity in desecration of a corpse.
Both are currently being held at the Boyle County Detention Center on $2 million cash bail, according to the sheriff’s office.
The arrests have revived interest in a case that began more than 30 years ago, when Anna disappeared when she was only 23 years old. She was last seen on November 19, 1992 in Junction Metropolis, Kentucky, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs).
Although Anna disappeared in 1992, the Boyle County Sheriff’s Office indicated that she was officially reported missing on February 25, 1994.
As investigators pursued the cold case over the years, attention repeatedly focused on a property on Spring Valley Avenue in Danville.
Following the arrests, authorities searched the property located at 148 Spring Valley Avenue. The Boyle County Sheriff’s Department, the Office of Emergency Management and public works crews responded to the scene, WKYT reported.
According to the media, the public works crews arrived with an excavator, and Several holes were observed on the property of more than 2 hectareswhere excavations had been carried out.
The same property had already been searched in 2016 after the execution of a court order, although nothing was found on that occasion.
The case file also includes details of a previous incident between Anna and Anthony, prior to her disappearance.
A 1995 newspaper article stated that Anthony turned himself in after Anna signed a kidnapping arrest warrant against him. Anthony allegedly arrived at his estranged wife’s apartment with their daughter, handcuffed Anna and took her out the back door before she escaped to a neighbor’s house and contacted police, according to the NamUs data source. Anthony later served 192 days in jail in connection with that incident.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the remains found this week belong to Anna. The Boyle County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information related to the case to contact investigators.
