President Donald Trump approved California’s request to issue a Presidential Emergency Declaration for Orange County to support the response to the incident that began on Thursday, May 21 in the city of Backyard Grove.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s office announced this Monday that Trump authorized the petition presented to him by California Saturday night.

“We thank the federal government for approving our application and that is helping to strengthen existing resources so that this community can recover safely,” Newsom stated in a statement.

With the emergency declaration approved by Trump, The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is authorized to provide assistance directly to address the crisis that occurred due to the risk of an explosion or leak of a dangerous chemical substance in Backyard Grove.
The emergency that occurred at the GKN Aerospace facilities forced the evacuation of more than 50,000 residents.
The incident began on the afternoon of Thursday, May 21, when a tank with a capacity of 34,000 gallons, in which there were around 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, overheated and threatened to explode or leak the highly toxic chemical.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for some areas of Backyard Grove, Stanton, Anaheim, Cypress, Westminster and Buena Park issued by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).
This Saturday, Newsom issued a state of emergency declaration and directed the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and all state agencies to provide support to Orange County and affected localities.
Newsom’s proclamation also grants additional resources and powers, including the possibility of using state property and fairgrounds as shelters for residents affected by evacuation orders.

Orange County Prosecutor’s Office begins investigation
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced this Saturday that began an investigation into the incident that occurred at the GKN Aerospace facilitiesin Backyard Grove, for the failure of a tank that stored a dangerous chemical substance that was at risk of exploding or causing a spill.
“They are in the middle of a commercial, residential area, with an urban population. “It is irresponsible, it is unsuitable and I am furious,” said Orange County Prosecutor Todd Spitzer in statements to CBS on Saturday night.
“I’m going to channel my anger into continuing to protect the public. Tonight we are not getting satisfactory answers, but, in the future, I assure you that we will obtain them“he added.

More than 50,000 people from Backyard Grove and surrounding communities They were evacuated due to the risk of explosion or spill of a chemical substance that was stored in a tank at the GKN Aerospace facilities.
The chemical involved is methyl methacrylatea toxic and highly flammable resin used to produce plastic for airplane cabins.
The tank, with 7,000 gallons of the chemical substancesuffered a failure that raised its temperature to more than 100 degrees, with the risk of an explosion or a spill of the toxic element.

Spitzer wanted to make sure that the prosecution team will preserve the evidence in case the case led to litigation.
For this reason, prosecutors began investigating the incident on Friday, with researchers who searched the area with the use of dronesin addition to requesting that if anyone who had information about the incident provide it to the prosecutor’s office.
