Google announced in Google I/O 2026 a series of Google Wallet improvements designed for the most chaotic moments of the plane trip. And they came at just the right time, with the start of the summer season and Memorial Day weekend as a backdrop.
Auto Linked Passes, the big change for frequent travelers
The most relevant function of this update is called Auto Linked Passesand what it does is simple but powerful: it automatically adds related passes to your Google Wallet without you having to search for them or install anything extra.
Until now, organizing your digital travel documents was an ebook and scattered task. With this feature, the process becomes proactive.
Azul Airways in Brazil send boarding passes directly to your passengers’ Google Wallet after they check-in, whether by app, online or at the airport. What we see here is a bid to reduce that classic friction of searching for the email with the PDF of the boarding pass when the line does not wait.
Baggage and offers linked to your boarding pass
Auto Linked Passes goes beyond boarding lumber. The feature can also send the traveler their digital luggage tag directly in the app, eliminating the need to print documents or rely on airport kiosks.
And here’s something few people expected: the system can also alert you about offers linked to your boarding pass or loyalty card. This is an integration that, without being intrusive, turns your Wallet into something closer to a travel assistant than to a simple digital wallet.
It’s a notable leap compared to how this worked just a year ago, when Google Wallet was basically a static container for cards.
Join mileage programs directly from the boarding lumber
Another new and very practical function is the possibility of sign up for the frequent flyer program from an airline directly from your boarding pass in Google Wallet, without having to search for the airline app yourself.
Gokmen Goksel, tech lead at Google Wallet, summed it up this way: “We want to make traveling feel less stressful and less disconnected, and be with travelers throughout their journey.”
Google presents you with the option just when you are most interested, which is when you have the boarding lumber in hand and you just remembered that you never signed up for the miles program. It’s smart marketing disguised as utility, and in this case, it works at the user’s discretion.
All this adds up to the Stay Updates for flight tracking which Google added just a month ago, with persistent notifications on the lock screen and always-on display. The direction is clear.
