A federal court temporarily stopped the use of new electoral map promoted by Alabama considering that it intentionally discriminates against African-American voters.
A three-judge panel determined that the map approved by the Republican legislature in 2023 violates the 14th Amendment to the Constitution because it is based on discriminatory racial criteria, The New York Times reported.
Instead of the map promoted by Republican legislators, The judges ordered to continue using the previously selected electoral concept by the court itselfwhich includes two congressional districts with a majority African American and was already used during the 2024 elections.
“Ultimately, we see no clear way to require Alabamians to cast their votes in the 2026 election under un notion of electoral districts tainted by discrimination intentional based on race,” the judges said.
