Justice Department officials requested that, ahead of the commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, security be beefed up in the nation’s capital by assigning another 1,500 National Guard troops to patrol the streets 24 hours a day.

Since late last summer, through an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, the federal government temporarily took over the administration of law enforcement in Washington, D.C. and, days later, National Guard troops were assigned to arrest people who had taken over the streets, using them as homes and crime spots.

During a press conference, Gadyaces Serralta, director of the United States Marshals Service, referred to the importance of redoubling police surveillance prior to the celebrations scheduled for July 4.

“They will continue to provide a visible presence and support throughout the district, so that law enforcement can focus on their duties. A visible presence within the reduction of response times to crimes, provides support to law enforcement on the scene and keeps both officers and civilians safe,” he said.

By incorporating the requested elements, the number of members of the National Guard will reach 5,000 and that must also be added to the support provided by non-public from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), federal marshals and elements of other agencies.

“There will be more US Park Police on foot, in vehicles and on horseback throughout Washington, DC,” the official added.

It should be noted that, at the end of November, two members of the National Guard were shot by an Afghan immigrant a few blocks from the White House and this led to 500 soldiers being deployed to the country’s capital.

The fact of increasing security is seen by the government’s opponents as a high cost, since It is estimated that the presence of the National Guard in the capital involves spending $1.6 million dollars a day.

However, the Pentagon plans to extend his stay until January 20, 2029, when the current president’s term ends.
