Ted Cruz, senator from Texas, described Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), representative from New York, as a “parasite” and she immediately exposed it by pointing out that she has been receiving a government salary for 23 years.
For several weeks, the Republican of Cuban roots has had a verbal battle with the Democrat of Puerto Rican descent.
A few days ago, when participating in the podcast “It’s Birth with Ilana Glazer”, the youngest first woman to hold a seat in Congress mentioned that the accumulation of wealth to a certain level “is not deserved.”
“You can’t win $1 billion dollars. You simply can’t win that. You can obtain market power, you can break the rules, you can do all kinds of things. You can abuse labor laws, you can pay people less than they are worth, but you can’t win that,” he said, questioning the legality of the strategy or the efforts of the people with the greatest amassed capital in the United States.
This comment set the tone forduring an interview given to the television network FoxNews, Ted Cruz attacked AOC, reproaching him for his limited vision of the possibility of achieving success legitimately.
“I recognize that, in her case – given that she was a waitress – it is probably true, and I do not mean to disrespect waiters. Being a waiter is an honorable profession, but she went from being a government employee to a parasite who lives at the expense of taxpayers,” he mentioned.
In response, The Democratic representative said she was disappointed to hear Cruz criticize her based on the way she made a living before making her way in American politics.
“He believes that, because he has a degree from Harvard and has never washed a table, that makes him better than someone who has had to work to earn a living. I find it funny that he has been receiving a government salary for 23 years, but has the audacity to criticize someone who comes from a family that had to work hard to get ahead and earn their place here,” stressed the Bronx-born congresswoman.
