More than two decades have passed, but the controversy continues to occupy space in the media with Ramón Ramírez’s controversial six-month stage in América in the Verano 1999 tournament and within those versions, he revealed in the “Tiempo Additional” program of the newspaper La Opinión that he never sympathized with the colors of the Águilas.

I wish it had never happened. With that I say everything; I am one hundred percent Chivas, I respect America a lot and I cannot speak much about America or, at least, with authority, because I was only there six months.

I can talk about Chivas because I spent more than ten years in that institution, because I was champion. I believe that both hobbies are demanding, they are winners, each with its own style and its own way or policies of success, but, well, what can I tell you? I respect that of Chivas, sorry, I respect that of America and I love and love that of Chivas

Why did you go to America then?

Well, I don’t even know myself. The rumor, the same old clamor, is that Luis García and Ricardo Peláez had come to America and that Chivas owed Televisa and that they had to be paid somehow. At that time I think that Don Salvador Martínez Garza and Chivas had some financial losses, some economic issues and well, well, this one. I think that, as they say,

America got paid like that, didn’t it?

With some players. They talk a lot about the case of Ramón Ramírez, but almost at the same time we also left the Nápoles worm and Joel the Sánchez shark, right? But obviously, for me… I didn’t want to go to América, I respected them a lot, but I felt fully identified with Chivas. And I think people understood it or at least understand my honesty. Later I say, well with everything and that, the people of America accepted it that way.

With all the respect you have for América and the love for Chivas, didn’t you like playing for América?

Look, I didn’t like having gone from Chivas to América and of course, and I have always said this in many of the interviews, all of us children grew up sympathizing with some team, I’m not saying hating another, I don’t know, but I imagine so.

You ask Cuauhtémoc Blanco, for example, who is a reference for América, or Isaac Terrazas, who are very good friends of mine, and you talk to them about the Chivas shirt, because they are going to tell you that they never grew up liking those colors.

I say it openly too. Since I was a child I never sympathized with America. It was never… Well, a team that I had some affection for, right? As if I had it for Chivas, as if I had it for the Cruz Azul of the seventies, for the Pumas de Cabinho, that is, I did have some memories of the Chivas champions of eighty-seven. To the champion, but not from America, honestly not, I say it with all sincerity.

¿And what team did you play for as a child??,

I grew up mainly going to those three teams. I was very sympathetic to those three teams. With Chivas, with Cruz Azul and with Pumas in each generation. But when I saw the title that Chivas won here in 1987, from then on I fell in love with Chivas.

The team of Alberto Guerra, Yayo de la Torre, Chepo, Benjamín Galindo, Demetrio Madero, Sheriff Quirarte, Lugo, “Pelón” Gutiérrez, I know them all; I tell you, I remember everyone very well.

Do you also have a love for Santos Laguna?

Of course, of course.

Why did you go to America,

I never wanted to go to America, but I don’t know who made the decision; I imagine it, but I don’t know who it was.
