The name of the reggaeton player Archangel He is once again marked by controversy after the speech he gave at his recent concert in Madrid went viral. During his time in this city, The Puerto Rican defended Spain against criticism for the conquest of America and rejected that the country has to apologize for its colonial past.
Several videos have circulated through social networks that immortalized the words of Austin Agustín Santosthe singer’s proper name, shared from the stage of the Movistar Arena in Madrid.
In his speech in front of thousands of attendees at the event, Arcángel rejected criticism against the Spanish conquest and assured that the apology for the colonial past is “absurd.”
“I know that you say Latinos, but for me we are not Latinos, we are Hispanic Americans. The real Latinos are the Spanish, the French and the Portuguese”the famous man is heard saying at the beginning of his message.
In this sense, he said he was grateful for the changes that the conquest brought with it: “Proud of all my beliefs, proud of the language that I carry, proud of the motherland that was and gave us birth. Because we were Indians. These people came and made us talk and made us believe and made us stand up.“.
Likewise, he added: “The bastards who go around saying that Spain owes America an apology. You bastard, what about that stupidity, bastard? What world do you live in, son of a bitch?”he questioned.
Arcángel concluded his reflection saying: “Ah, they stole the gold, that’s it. Cabr*n, what about the streets, and the schools, and the churches that they built so that you would be educated today? Where did it come from, son of a bitch? (…) I am proud, I adore my motherland, Spain. Give me a shout, please.”
The singer’s statements arise in the midst of a tense moment in the relationship between Spain and Mexico driven by the visit to the country of the Madrid president Isabel Díaz Ayuso. During her time in Mexico City, the president defended the legacy of Hernán Cortés and described Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as an “ultra-left dictator.”
The controversy escalated when Díaz Ayuso was denied entry to the Platino Awards (held in Riviera Maya (Mexico) to “prevent the event from being used as a political platform,” the organization revealed.
