The municipal president of Santa María Chilchotla, Regino Gallardo Gonzálezwas arrested by the Typical Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Oaxaca for his alleged responsibility in the crimes of aggravated extortion and attempted homicide, state authorities reported.
According to the investigation, the events occurred in September 2024, when an armed group broke into a home in the municipality that it governs to carry out alleged “floor fee” charges and attack the inhabitants of the property.
The State Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the investigations made it possible to prove the mayor’s participation in the events, so a judge issued the corresponding arrest warrant. In addition, he indicated that he maintains open lines of investigation into an alleged criminal cell that would operate in the border area between Oaxaca and Veracruz.
Regarding this case, the N+ site reported that the authorities are investigating possible links between the mayor and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), although the Prosecutor’s Office has not officially confirmed a direct relationship with said prison organization.
According to the newspaper La Jornada, the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office did not specify the exact place or moment in which the capture of the municipal president was carried out, who is currently under ministerial protection while the judicial process against him progresses.
The state agency affirmed that the case is part of its “zero tolerance” policy against crimes committed by public servants, and reiterated that no charge represents a mechanism of impunity.
