Within the framework of the LaLiga Fan Fest in Mexico City, Javier Mascherano recognized his desire to direct, sometime, in Liga MX. The former Argentine soccer player highlighted the level of Mexican soccer.
“It is a very competitive leaguewith strong teams and great players. I think it is a very entertaining league, I like its format (…) At some point, if the opportunity exists, I would like to direct in Mexico“said the former FC Barcelona midfielder.
In his short experience as a coach, Javier Mascherano has directed Argentina’s under-20 and under-23 teams. In January 2025 he took on his first challenge in professional football at the club level with the Inter Miami of the MLS.
Mascherano only directed 67 games in the team led by Lionel Messi. Mascherano left a balance of 38 wins, 15 draws and 14 losses. But his project did not take hold.
In fact, Javier Mascherano’s only title in American soccer was in 2025. The “Little Boss” won the MLS Cup after Inter Miami defeated Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1.
Mascherano talks about the World Cup in Mexico
In addition to praising the local Mexican tournament, Javier Mascherano spoke about his expectations for the World Cup in Mexican territory. The former Inter Miami coach believes that the Aztec country has the capabilities to face an organizational challenge like the 2026 World Cup.
“Mexico is fully capable of hosting a championship like this (…) what one hopes is an entertaining World Cup; especially those who have the possibility of coming to see him will have to travel a lot,” said the Argentine strategist.
