Childhood obesity is a multifactorial problem that requires the attention of the entire family, not just health professionals. The need to change the eating and living habits of all household members is emphasized.
Pediatricians emphasize a respectful approach when addressing the issue of weight, avoiding unnecessary stigma and blame, so as not to create the germ of a future eating disorder (ED). It is essential that consultations focus on the child’s well-being and the family’s willingness to discuss obesity.
In this regard, EFE Health took on the task of consulting representatives of the Spanish Society of Obesity (SEEDO) and the Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP), in order to receive authorized opinions.
Professionals suggest that the treatment of obesity should be holistic, addressing both diet and the emotional and social aspects related to the condition.
Changes in eating habits
The SEEDO nutritionist highlights the importance of limiting the consumption of unhealthy foods instead of prohibiting them. Families must learn to make informed and nutritious food choices.
Modifying the diet of just one child is ineffective; the change must include all members of the household. Messages that could encourage an unhealthy relationship with food should be avoided.
Promotion of healthy lifestyles
Promoting physical activity and regulating screen time are crucial to combating obesity. These habits must be integrated purely into daily life.
Nutritional education should be part of the family dynamic, always respecting hunger and satiety signals. The goal is for children to acquire healthy habits in a pure way, without the weight of a negative approach towards their body image.
