New Jersey authorities have charged a former firefighter and paramedic with undertake a trip of approximately 800 kilometers from Maine with the supposed objective of murdering his ex-partner and her entire family.
Brian Lanzim, 37, was arrested after a police operation that occurred last month in South Toms River, after he allegedly tried to break into his ex-partner’s parents’ home armed, according to Ashbury Park Press.
According to court documents cited by local media, The man would have reacted violently after the woman ended the relationship via video call and obtain a temporary restraining order against him.
During the conversation, the woman claimed to have heard the sound of a gun being manipulated. When he warned him that he would go to the authorities, Lanzim allegedly responded: “No, you won’t. You wouldn’t do that to me.”
Threatening messages and armed travel
The investigation indicates that, after the breakup, Lanzim sent several threatening text messages after the woman stopped answering his calls.
“If you come between me and my children, I’m going to do what I have to do,” the suspect reportedly wrote, according to an affidavit filed by the prosecution.
Another message said: “If your father is there, I will have to delete him.”
Authorities maintain that the man He drove from Maine to New Jersey equipped with two firearms, a bulletproof vest and at least 15 high-capacity magazines.
“He was ready for war,” Deputy District Attorney Mara Brater said during the court hearing.
Police foil alleged attack
The woman went to a police station after the breakup and left her children at a friend’s house. Investigators tracked Lanzim’s phone and detected that he was traveling south on the Backyard Reveal Parkway.
The agents then went to the home of the woman’s parents and ordered them to leave the place.
Shortly after, the Toyota 4Runner vehicle driven by Lanzim passed the officers and headed directly toward the family residence, according to case documents.
Police said the suspect sped across the grass apparently trying to run over the officers before getting out of the vehicle and trying to enter the home.
Body cameras recorded the moment an officer ordered him to drop the weapon. Seconds later Several shots were heard fired by the police, which wounded the suspect in the pelvis and one hand.
Prosecutor maintains that he planned to kill the family
After being subdued, Lanzim shouted: “I lost her. Tell her and the children that I love them,” according to the court file.
Inside the vehicle, Authorities found a loaded rifle, a Glock 17 pistol, knives and high-capacity magazines.
The prosecution argued during the hearing that the man planned to murder his ex-partner’s family to obtain full custody of his children.
The defense, on the other hand, claimed that Lanzim was suffering from a mental health crisis and that he was actually seeking to provoke the police to kill him.
The judge ordered that he remain detained while the judicial process continues. Lanzim faces charges of attempted murder, burglary, terroristic threats and weapons offences.
