At first glance it seems like a minor, almost decorative component inside the engine. However, The oil dipstick fulfills a key function that many only appreciate when it is no longer in place.

Anyone who has ever checked the oil knows that that little metal element is not there by chance.

Its absence not only prevents control of the level, it also alters the normal operation of the engine, something that can escalate quickly if ignored.
A small piece with an important role
The dipstick allows you to check how much oil the engine has and what condition it is in. It’s about quantity, but it also offers clues about internal wear, dirt or possible anomalies.
With the correct level, the engine works smoothly and protected. When lubrication is lacking, internal parts begin to rub more than they should, raising the temperature and accelerating deterioration.
Spherical without the dipstick can generate a progressive oil leak. The tube is left open and the internal pressure of the engine can push small amounts of lubricant out. This not only makes it dirty, but also gash inspires the level available.
In addition, that same hole becomes an entry route for dirt and moisture. Over time, these contaminants affect the quality of the oil and compromise its ability to protect internal components.

Direct impact on the engine
The absence of the rod can also upset the balance of the system. An unexpected air intake is generated, which can cause performance failures, especially at idle or at low speeds.
If the problem persists, the risk increases. A low oil level can lead to severe damage to parts such as pistons or valves. In the worst case scenario, the engine can seize and stop working completely.
Can you continue driving?
Although there is no penalty for driving without the rod, it is not recommended. The mechanical consequences can result in repairs that easily exceed the $1,000 dollars.
The most sensible thing is to replace it as soon as possible. It is an economical and easy to obtain piece. In the meantime, temporarily covering the hole can help prevent further damage, but it is not a permanent solution.
Paying attention to these details makes the difference between an engine that runs smoothly and one that ends up in the shop prematurely.
