Starting this Friday, the Department of State (DOS) will launch the revocation of passports for parents who have failed to comply with child support, this according to information confirmed to the news agency The Associated Press (AP).

Under this position assumed by the government,It is projected that nearly 2,700 US citizens whose child support debt is greater than $100,000 will lose their passports and, therefore, the ability to leave the country either for work or on vacation.

Although since the beginning of the year the possibility of sanctioning parents reluctant to comply with child support was already contemplated, there was no registry of offenders.

This number of defaulters emerged through information provided by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to the DOS.

Now, the government’s next goal is to extend passport revocation to parents with child support debts greater than $2,500.a threshold established by law in 1996.

However, HHS is still collecting data from state agencies that track this group of people.

Until this week, only those who requested the renewal of their passports could have said document revoked upon confirming that they had failed to comply with more than $100,000 in child support.

However, since you already have a record of data, now, without the need for your passport to have expired, said document will practically automatically be revoked by the government.

According to Mora Namdar, Undersecretary of State for Consular Affairs, Once the delinquent parents are up to date with child support, they will be able to apply for a new passport.

“We are expanding a common sense practice that has proven to be effective in getting those who owe child support to pay their debt. Once these parents pay off their debts, they will be able to once again enjoy the privilege of having a US passport,” he said on social media.

With respect to parents reluctant to cover their respective child support debts who are abroad at the time their passport is revoked, they must go to a United States embassy or consulate to obtain a document that allows them to return to the country in an emergency, in case their trip is required.
