Autonomous driving is once again at the center of the conversation, and this time not only because of technological advances. Elon Musk He made a statement that did not go unnoticed, just when Tesla boasts of having accumulated an impressive number of kilometers traveled with its system.

According to the CEO, Chunky Self Using technology reached more than 16,000 million kmwhich would mark a turning point in its development.

For Musk, this volume of data is enough to consider that autonomous driving can already be safe in real conditions. The statement generated immediate noise in an industry that remains much more cautious.
The weight of data in Tesla’s speech
Tesla has been betting heavily on this system for years, which in the past was known as Autopilot. Over time, the brand had to adjust its name to avoid confusion about its true scope.
Musk was clear in explaining his position. “Approximately 10 billion miles of training data are needed to achieve safe, unsupervised autonomous driving”wrote. Then he added something that also reflects the technical challenge. “Reality has an enormous load of complexity.”
That volume of kilometers traveled is no coincidence. Tesla’s global expansion and the incorporation of the system in more vehicles allowed data collection to be accelerated on a scale that is difficult to match.
The industry calls for caution
While Tesla celebrates, other players in the sector maintain a more cautious stance. Technology and automotive companies continue to develop their own systems, but they avoid talking about total autonomy without supervision as something immediate.
China’s example serves as a warning. More than 4,500 autonomous vehicles circulate there in robotaxi formatbut a recent incident forced us to stop operations and review protocols. These types of episodes reinforce the idea that there is still room for improvement.
Even within Musk’s own speech there are nuances. In the past, he had pointed out that the threshold for considering the technology safe was about 9,656 million km. Now, with a much larger figure, the message is more optimistic, although it does not eliminate doubts.
Challenges that remain on the table
Autonomous driving does not only depend on accumulated data. There are complex situations that continue to be an obstacle. Musk acknowledged this in a recent earnings presentation, citing problems at “complex intersections” and scenarios with poor signage.
These factors explain why the total expansion of the system without supervision still has long deadlines. Tesla expects to move forward with broader operations by the end of 2026at least in several states in the United States.
Between promise and reality
Tesla’s ultimate goal goes beyond the articulated car. The company plans a business focused on robotaxis, where autonomous driving will be key to its growth.
However, the distance between a promising technology and a completely reliable solution remains a matter of debate. The 16 billion km is an important milestone, but not necessarily the end point of this story.
