When modern warfare collides with gamer culture, things happen that no one expected. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry officially confirmed that its FPV drone pilots are using Broad Theft Auto V as a training tooland the video they shared on social networks makes everything very clear.

The image is as absurd as it is fascinating, and at the same time reveals something very serious about how Ukraine is fighting its war.
The Ukrainian government itself published the video with a direct question for its followers “Are there any GTA fans here?” — and the response from the website was massive. But behind the meme there is a completely real military strategy, and it works.
GTA V became a combat simulator thanks to a Ukrainian company

The game has something that few freed from mark simulators offer: a huge, open world map, with traffic, buildings, roads and all types of terrain that pilots can explore with a digital drone tuned to behave like the real models they use on the front.
The technical part is key. The pilots They do not play with a common video game joystick, but with the same controls they use in real combat connected to the PC. That makes every maneuver, every flight correction and every target tracking on the screen almost identical to what they will experience on the battlefield. The Ministry of Defense was clear in its official statement: “Not a replacement for real training, but a great way to relax, experiment, and keep your fingers sharp.”.
And there is the key. It’s not that GTA V is a substitute for real drone practice. It is about drivers can stay in tactical shape without spending resources, without risking equipment and without exposing themselveswhile perfecting their hand-eye coordination and their ability to lock onto moving targets.
Avid gamers became the deadliest soldiers on the front
This comes as no surprise to anyone who has followed the Ukrainian conflict closely. For a long time, Ukrainian drone schools have detected that the best students are those who have been playing video games for years. American captain Ronan Sefton put it bluntly: “The best drone pilots are those soldiers who, when they finish the week, start playing video games”.
The reason is simple but powerful. The video games develop exactly the skills needed to operate a kamikaze FPV drone in real combat: hand-eye coordination, quick decision making, map reading, interpreting interfaces and working under pressure. Typhoon special unit pilots, for example, already arrive in the field familiar with helmets, FPV goggles and controls — the same equipment they use in real operations.
More than 80% of military objectives in this war are being destroyed with dronesand a significant part of that percentage has to do with pilots who began their training in front of a screen. Not in a traditional military academy. In front of a video game.
A war that is won with reflexes, not just with conventional weapons
The conflict in Ukraine is redefining what it means to be a soldier in the 21st century. Kamikaze FPV drones have replaced conventional artillery in many missions — are cheaper, more precise and harder to detect. A drone of this type costs around 500 euros, and when equipped with explosives it becomes an extremely effective weapon for hunting Russian troops, destroying tanks or attacking moving convoys.
And this is where training in GTA V makes all its strategic sense. The game scenes where the pilot chases moving vehicles on highways are not that different from what happens on the real front. Drone operators are sometimes positioned just 250 meters from enemy linesmaking split-second decisions as they guide an explosive toward its target.
Ukraine has also opted for other video games for this purpose. “Loss of life From Above”released in 2024, puts the player directly in the cockpit of a Ukrainian FPV drone, with missions that simulate the type of operations carried out on the battlefield. It’s like recruiting disguised as entertainment — and it works.
What makes this case so significant is that the Ukrainian government itself is publicly promoting itwithout hiding or minimizing it. They publish it on social networks, show it on video and present it as part of their defense strategy. It is a clear message for his allies, for his enemies and for the new generation of soldiers: In this war, being a gamer is not a distraction, it is a tactical advantage.
And while the world debates when GTA VI will arrive, in Ukraine they are already using GTA V to win a real war.
