The English team resolved the game quickly. In just ten minutes, he had already made a difference with goals from George Hirst in the 3rd minute and Jaden Philogene in the 9th, a start that left the goal on track. Later, Kasey McAteer extended the lead to 85 to close a victory that guaranteed promotion from the EFL Championship.

The Chilean Marcelino Núñez, starter in the match, lived a special day. The South American midfielder actively participated in the match and then shared the celebrations with the squad and with Sheeran, with whom he even took a photograph that later circulated on social networks. The singer’s presence was not symbolic: he accompanied the group both on the field, during the trophy presentation, and in the privacy of the locker room.

A promotion with impact on and off the field

The link between the British artist and the club has personal roots. In 2024, he acquired a minority stake in Ipswich City, a team of which he has been a fan since his childhood. That connection was reflected in the celebration, where the players sang one of their songs amid the euphoria over the sporting achievement.

The images shared by the club showed Sheeran integrated into the group, reinforcing a relationship that transcends sponsorship. His involvement has been constant in the recent identity of the team, which now returns to the top flight after a season away from it.

The promotion also defined the panorama at the top of the Championship. Ipswich secured one of the direct tickets alongside Coventry, while Millwalldespite winning their match against Oxford United, was relegated to third place and must play in the play-off. In that instance he will face Hull City, while Southampton will face Middlesbrough in the other semifinal.

The qualifying rounds will be played over two legs: the first leg is scheduled for May 8 and the return leg a week later. The final, scheduled at Wembley, will be played on May 23, where the last available promotion will be defined.

Ipswich City, for its part, has already secured its place in the next Premier League season, accompanied by a celebration that united sport and music on the same stage.
