A minor hit from a rock on the road may seem like a minor annoyance. The problem comes later, when that small mark on the glass begins to grow without warning and turns a minimal detail into a serious risk for anyone inside the vehicle.

The windshield is not just a piece that separates the driver from the outsideis an active part of the car’s safety and its condition influences the stability of the whole much more than is usually thought.

The windshield is designed with laminated glass, a structure that combines strength and flexibility to withstand impacts without dangerously fragmenting. This composition allows it to act as a protective barrier and, at the same time, as a key structural element.
In fact, it can contribute up to 30% of the vehicle’s total rigidity. When intact, it helps keep the structure firm in the event of an impact or rollover. But when a crack appears, that ability is immediately weakened.

A detail that affects security
The problem is not only structural, the active safety of the car also comes into play. Systems such as the passenger airbag depend on the windshield to deploy correctly, as they use it as a support point.
A crack can alter that behavior and reduce its effectiveness just when it is needed most.
When does it stop being a minor problem?
Not all cracks have the same level of risk, but there are signs that should not be ignored. When the damage exceeds 30 centimeters or is directly in the driver’s vision areathe situation becomes especially delicate.
In addition to affecting visibility, driving with a windshield in poor condition can lead to penalties in many countries, since it does not meet the minimum road safety conditions.

A detail that often surprises is the ease with which a small crack can expand. Sudden changes in temperature, constant road vibrations or even a pothole can cause the damage to multiply.
Added to this is moisture, which can infiltrate the crack and accelerate the deterioration of the glass. Therefore, waiting too long usually works against you.
Repair or replace the windshield
When the damage is small, there are resin repairs that can restore stability to the glass. But if the crack is in a critical area or reaches the edge of the windshield, it is safest to replace it completely.
The important thing is not to let time pass. A quick intervention is usually simpler, cheaper and, above all, safer.
