The Pentagon has asked Congress to formally replace the name of the Department of Defense to the “War Department,” which it says would cost $52 million.that is, less than half of what was exposed at the beginning of the year.

Under the argument that it will not have a “significant impact” on President Donald Trump’s defense budget request for fiscal year 2027, the legislative proposal presented contemplates that, of the amount of money indicated, about $3.5 million dollars will be allocated to the Department of Defense to carry out the modification of its name.

Regarding the office of Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense, and Headquarters Services in Washington, they would be granted another $3 million to implement the necessary adjustments; while for the modifications in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Combatant Commands and the National General Staff, $400,000 dollars is considered.

However, Where the most money is planned to be spent is on the Defense Agencies and the department’s field activities, with an estimated amount of $44.6 million dollars.

Another point in question is that, implementing the updates proposed by the federal administration to Changing the name of the Department of Defense would imply more than 7,500 adjustments to federal law.

“The revision of the Department’s name serves as a vital reminder of the importance and respect deserved by our greater mission: fighting and winning wars. It serves as a strategic objective to measure and prioritize all activities,” indicates part of the 92-page proposal written by Defense officials.

According to a report released in January by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the measure to return its normal name to the federal agency responsible for providing the military forces necessary to protect national security and deter conflicts involves more than double what was recently stated.

“Costs could reach $125 million if the name change were implemented widely and quickly across the department.

A regulatory name change could cost hundreds of millions of dollars, depending on how Congress and the Department of Defense decide to implement the change,” Phillip Swagel, director of the CBO, indicated at the start of the year in an 11-page letter.
