Following the incident that reignited the debate over security at high-profile events in the United States and in a nation still shaken by the chaos experienced on Saturday night, President Donald Trump broke his silence after the alleged attack that interrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

With the defiant tone that characterizes him, the president said he had not felt fear while the Secret Service evacuated him from the Hilton resort.the same scene where Ronald Reagan was shot forty five years ago.

“I wasn’t worried. I understand life; we live in a crazy world,” Trump said during a tense interview with Norah O’Donnell for the 60 Minutes program. The president described the seconds of uncertainty as a moment of “chaos” where, initially, he confused the sound of gunshots with the roar of a falling tray.

According to federal authorities, the alleged attacker, a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California, managed to approach the perimeter of the event, held at the Washington Hilton resort, before being neutralized by Secret Service agents. The suspect had previously sent a manifesto to his family in which he expressed violent intentions against members of the administration..

Evacuation in seconds and presidential reaction

Witnesses recounted moments of confusion when gunshots were heard inside or near the significant room.where more than 2,500 guests, including officials, journalists and celebrities, were gathered. The Secret Service acted in a matter of seconds, surrounding the president and removing him from the place under strict security protocols.

The president also described the first lady’s reaction, noting that, although visibly affected, she acted calmly.. “Who wouldn’t be upset in a situation like that?” he commented. Both were taken to a secure area before later returning to the White House.

According to Trump himself, the agents’ quick intervention prevented major consequences. Authorities confirmed that there were no fatalities or serious injuries, although an agent protected with a bulletproof vest was hit by a projectile without suffering significant damage.

Ongoing investigation and tensions with the press

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) maintains an open investigation to clarify the motive for the attack. Preliminary versions suggest that the suspect acted motivated by a combination of ideological and personal factors, including anti-Christian messages and radical positions against the Government.

During the interview, Trump also had a tense moment with journalist Norah O’Donnell, who cited fragments of the attacker’s manifesto. that contained serious accusations against the president. The president categorically rejected these statements and criticized the journalist for reading them on the air.

The incident also provoked reactions in the political sphere. Legislators from both parties questioned the security protocols implemented during the event, especially due to the concentration of key government figures in the same place. Some suggested reviewing practices similar to the “designated survivor” used in the State of the Union address.

Despite what happened, Trump expressed his intention for the correspondents’ dinner to be held again in the short term.. “We cannot allow an act like this to stop a tradition that represents freedom of the press,” he said, while promising to reinforce security measures.

The case remains under investigation while federal authorities evaluate possible flaws in the operation and seek to precisely determine the attacker’s motivations.
