A court in Columbiana County, Ohio, sentenced Frederick L. Harroff, 66, to a Minimum sentence of 39 years in prison for trying to murder his ex-wife in an attack that occurred in June 2025.

The sentence, handed down by Judge Scott Washam, could extend up to 44 and a half years, far exceeding the prosecutor’s initial recommendation.

According to the testimonies presented at the trial, the aggressor began the attack on the night of June 2, 2025, when the victim was in his home.

The man hit her with a baseball bat, tried to strangle her with a rope and his bare hands, and tried to immobilize her before setting the house on fire. with the intention of causing his death.

During the hearing, the victim said he struggled for approximately an hour to survive.

Despite the seriousness of the attacks, The woman managed to escape through the back door and seek help at a neighbor’s house.

Authorities found evidence of violence at the scene, including blood on the bed and a bloody rope. The accused was arrested shortly after in a nearby wooded area, with traces of blood and burns.

Testimonies at the hearing

During the sentencing hearing, The victim described her attacker as a “merciless and remorseless” person.while family members highlighted his strength and resilience after the attack.

The accused, for his part, expressed regret and claimed not to completely remember what happened, claiming that he was not of sound mind.

The judge took into account various elements when handing down the sentence, including the defendant’s work history, his military service, his state of mental health and the absence of any previous criminal record.

However, he stressed that the seriousness of the events marked a radical change in his behavior, describing the attack as “vicious and horrific.”

The case has been pointed out as an example of the severity with which justice can respond to episodes of extreme violence in the domestic sphere.

The sentence seeks to send a clear message about the legal consequences of this type of crime, as well as recognize the severity of the damage caused to the victim.

Despite the trauma, the victim survived the attack and continues her recovery process, supported by her family.

“He didn’t win,” said one family member during the hearing, highlighting the woman’s resistance in the face of an episode that transformed her life.
