WASHINGTON – The United States Secret Service evacuated the president and first lady, Donald and Melania Trump, along with other members of the US Cabinet, from the room where the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) was being held on Saturday night after hearing what appeared to be gunshots.according to journalists who were at the dinner.
The explosions occurred outside the ballroom where the dinner was being held, which was dominated by a table on a stage where the president and first lady were sitting, who were evacuated shortly after the shots were heard.
Later, Trump himself wrote on a social network that the shooter had been arrested and that he recommended that the repeat continue.
“What a night in Washington DC. The Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that ‘THE SHOW GO ON,’ but we will be guided completely by the authorities. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the night will be very different than planned, and we will simply have to do it again,” Trump wrote.
Other members of the Government who had attended the gala held at the Hilton Resort in Washington were also evacuated, such as the Secretaries of State, Marco Rubio, of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, and of War, Pete Hegseth..
Television footage then showed more members of the Secret Service fanning out into the ballroom and, after a few minutes, they began asking attendees to leave the room because it is now “a crime scene.”
The dinner will be rescheduled for 30 days
In a second message, President Trump assured that he, his wife and all members of his cabinet were safe. And he announced that the dinner will take place within a month.
“Law enforcement has requested that we leave the facilities, in accordance with protocol, which we will do immediately. I will give a press conference in 30 minutes from the White House press room. The First Lady, as well as the vice president and all members of the cabinet, are in perfect condition. We will be speaking to them in half an hour. I have spoken with everyone responsible for the event and we will reschedule it within 30 days,” the president wrote on the Truth Social network.
