The King of Pop continues to reign, this time on the big screen. “Michael”, the long-awaited biographical film about the life and career of Michael Jackson, got off to a good start at the international box officecollecting $18.5 million on its first day of releaseas reported by Decrease-off date with data from Universal.
So far, it has been released in different countries, including France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, Germany and Brazil.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film chronicles the artist’s journey from his humble beginnings in the Jackson 5 to becoming one of the most influential figures in world music.
One of the great attractions is the performance of Jaafar Jackson, nephew of the singerwho brings the pop icon to life with an astonishing similarity. The cast is completed by Colman Domingo and Nia Long, playing Michael’s parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.
World domination at the door
“Michael,” distributed by Lionsgate in North America and by Universal in international markets, It will officially arrive this Friday, April 24, in the United States and to the rest of the 82 territories around the world.
The projections for the weekend are overwhelming: The film is expected to dominate the global box office with between $65 and $75 million in North America. and a similar or even higher figure – from $75 to $80 million – internationally.
So far, the public reception has been overwhelming. France leads premieres with $2.6 million in 743 theaterstied with the United Kingdom and Ireland. Italy follows with $1.3 million, and Mexico and Spain with $1.1 million each.
According to Universal, these figures exceed those of two of the highest-grossing biopics of the last decade in most territories: “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Oppenheimer.”
However, not everything is perfect. Critics point out that “Michael” offers a sweetened vision of the singer’s life, by completely omitting the accusations of child sexual abuse that marked his final years.
Initially, the script included a lawsuit filed against Jackson in 1993but the producers had to eliminate those scenes when they discovered a clause in the agreement with the young complainant that expressly prohibited the representation or mention of the case in film or television.
As a result, the film concludes during Snide’s 1988 tour, avoiding any controversy later. Even so, the cost of production is high, exceeding $170 millionmaking it one of the most expensive biographical films in history.
The story of the king of pop, so far, It only has 47% approval on Depraved Tomatoes.
