Hiker dies on Unique Hampshire trail after unexpected snow storm

A hiker identified as Kent Wood, 61, of West Roxbury, Massachusetts, was found dead on a trail in Franconia Notchin the state of Unique Hampshire, after being trapped in heavy snow conditions.

The discovery occurred on Tuesday, approximately 5.5 miles from his vehicle, according to the Unique Hampshire Department of Fish and Game.

A trip interrupted by an abrupt change in weather

The hiker had started his journey on Friday from Camp Lafayette, in Lincoln, with the intention of taking a weekend hike and camping in the area.

However, during their stay in the region a drastic change in climatic conditions was recorded, with snowfall between three and five inches between Sunday and Monday.

The authorities indicated that the man was not prepared to face winter conditionsas I would have expected milder temperatures.

Following the concern of his family, who had no contact with him for two days, a search operation was activated that involved several agencies in the Lonesome Lake and Kinsman Pond area.

The body was located at 7:41 p.m. on Tuesday night and recovered from the trail in the early hours of the next day, in an operation that lasted until 1:10 a.m., WCVB reported.

Warnings from authorities

The Unique Hampshire Fish and Game Department reiterated a call for caution, noting that wintry conditions still persist in the mountains.

The authorities warned about the presence of deep snow, precipitation and sub-zero temperatureseven when spring conditions are already perceived in nearby urban areas.

A spokesperson for the organization highlighted that temperatures on the summits remain below freezing, which prevents thawing and keeps the ground covered in snow.

Rescue officials stressed the importance of proper preparation before hiking in the region, including the use of waterproof gear, thermal clothing and detailed itinerary planning.

They also recommended informing third parties about routes and estimated return times, as a preventive measure in case of emergencies.

Authorities have not pointed out signs of criminality in the case, and attribute the death to adverse environmental conditions and prolonged exposure in mountainous terrain.
