The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this Thursday that will propose Roberto Lazzeri as the new ambassador to the United Statesone of the most relevant foreign policy positions in the country.
The announcement occurs in the midst of negotiations for the review of the Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada and tensions with Washington due to the aggressive rhetoric of President Donald Trump.
“It has to follow a whole procedure, that’s why we hadn’t made it public. You just have to send it to the United States and see if the United States accepts this process (…) ‘(Roberto Lazzeri) has a very good relationship with the entire Government of Mexico and also with counterparts in the United States,’ the president highlighted during her daily press conference.
Likewise, he thanked the “excellent work” of the current ambassador, Esteban Moctezuma, who has been in office since 2021 and who stressed that “he is helping in an extraordinary way” on bilateral issues such as transportation or the closure of the border to Mexican agricultural exports due to cases of screwworm.
Thus, Sheinbaum highlighted the work of Lazzeri, 42 years old and director of the public entities Nacional Financiera (Nafin) and Bancomext.who also served as chief of staff in the Ministry of Finance during the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), pointing out that “the valuable issue” in the relationship with the United States is the trade issue.
In the absence of the confirmation process, the renewal at the head of Mexico’s diplomatic mission in the United States occurs at a valuable moment with the review of the T-MEC or with the current tensions in terms of security, with pressure from Washington in the fight against drug trafficking.
Lazzeri was present, precisely, this week at the meeting with the United States trade representative, Jamieson Greer, in Mexico City to accompany the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard. EFE
