The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that her Government sent a diplomatic note to the US to demand explanations for the participation of US agents in an anti-drug operation in the state of Chihuahua, where two officials from that country and two Mexicans died, in a case that could imply a violation of national sovereignty.
“This needs to be clarified. Foreign Affairs sent a letter to the US ambassador so that he could provide all the information“Sheinbaum stated at a press conference, noting that a message has been sent to the US ambassador, Ronald Johnson, to explain what happened.
The controversy broke out after the US Embassy confirmed the death of two US officials and two researchers from Chihuahua in a road accident in the mountains, after actions against clandestine laboratories in that state in northern Mexico and on the border with the US.

Sheinbaum explained that the letter indicates that this fact “It is not part of the security protocol that we have agreed upon (with the US) and the understanding we have with them”.
“It is an issue of national security and sovereignty, that is why what happened is not minor,” he insisted.
The president insisted that the federal authorities were unaware of the participation of two foreign agents in field work, which may represent a violation of national security.
“There was no knowledge of it. We have reviewed whether Foreign Affairs or National Defense or the Ministry of Security was informed, and the participation of these people was not reported.“, he indicated.
Furthermore, he stressed that no state government can establish collaboration in security matters with foreign authorities outside of federal channels, and warned that the actions of agents from other countries in national territory are regulated by the Constitution and the National Security Law.
“It must be clear to both the United States and state governments that collaboration must occur within the framework of understanding and the law.” said.
At first, the Chihuahua state prosecutor declared that the agents were returning from the operation, but later clarified that the Americans did not directly participate in the seizure of the laboratory used by drug traffickers and that they carried out training tasks.
The controversy grew when The Washington Post reported that the two Americans allegedly belonged to the CIA and had intelligently supported an operation against drug trafficking, in a context of greater pressure from Washington on Mexico in terms of security and political sensitivity for national sovereignty.
