An appeals court on Wednesday blocked a California law, passed in September 2025, that required federal immigration agents to wear a badge or some type of identification.
The Trump administration filed a lawsuit in November to challenge the law, which was signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, arguing that it would jeopardize the safety of officers through harassment, disclosure of non-public information and violence.
The federal government also considered California’s law to violate the Constitution because the state was imposing rules on federal authorities.
A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued a temporary injunction on Wednesday, pending appeal.
Previously, it had already granted a temporary administrative injunction to block the implementation of the law.
