A shooting that occurred Monday morning in Leinbach Park, located in North Carolina, left two teenagers dead and at least five people injured, after a previously organized fight that escalated into an exchange of gunfire.
The incident occurred before 10:00 a.m., when a group of young people confronted each other in the park, according to Winston-Salem Police, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.
Fatalities and injuries
Authorities identified the deceased as Erubey Romero Medina, 17, and Daniel Jimenez Millian, 16. Both had gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
In addition, five other people were injured, four teenage girls aged 14, 15, 17 and 19, and an 18-year-old man.
The victims were located in a nearby parking lot.with injuries ranging from minor to critical.
Authorities indicated that several individuals participated in the exchange of gunfire, although the number of weapons involved has not yet been determined.
Police Chief William H. Penn said the incident was isolated to the park, while detectives work to establish the role of each person involved.
The case also has the participation of the North Carolina Sing Bureau of Investigation.
The authorities expressed frustration at the youth violence and considered that the incident could have been avoided.
County Attorney Jim O’Neill urged the community to report potential clashes before they escalate.
For his part, the police chief asked parents to be more actively involved in their children’s lives and warned about the risks of fights between young people.
“This didn’t have to happen. It’s senseless,” Penn said.
The park where the shooting occurred is near a high schoolalthough authorities confirmed that the students were not in danger.
