The Fundamental Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Mexico confirmed this Tuesday that the attacker who opened fire on visitors in the archaeological zone of Teotihuacán, which left a Canadian tourist dead, acted alone and that his behavior was allegedly inspired by violent attacks that occurred in other countries.
“The evidence collected up to this moment and in an indicative manner shows a psychopathic profile of the aggressor characterized by a tendency to copy situations that happened elsewhereat other times and by other characters,” stressed the traditional prosecutor of the State of Mexico, José Luis Cervantes Martínez, at the presidential press conference.
The attack left 13 people injured, seven of them from gunshot wounds, and a Canadian woman died as well as the perpetrator himself, a 27-year-old Mexican man.
The investigation also determined that the attack was not spontaneoussince the aggressor had previously visited the archaeological zone on several occasions, stayed in nearby hotels and carried out reconnaissance work before committing the attack.
For his part, the Secretary of Security of the State of Mexico, Cristóbal Castañeda Carrillo, explained that “it was determined that it was a single attacker,” and that he arrived at the scene in an enforcement vehicle from a hotel where he had stayed on several occasions, as part of the planning of the attack.
The official confirmed that seven of the 13 injured were from gunshot wounds and all the injured were foreign nationalities.
Regarding the injured, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of the Interior, stated that as of this morning seven injured remain in hospital care and six injured have already been discharged.
The commander of the National Guard, Guillermo Briseño Lobera, confirmed that The aggressor decided to take his own life on the spot.
“He is wounded in the leg, they try to neutralize him in this way, but he later takes his life”he added.

They reinforce security
The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, stated that “the State’s response was immediate and forceful” and highlighted that elements of the National Guard acted “quickly, bravely, with determination and effectiveness.”
“The aggressor was located and neutralized in a matter of minutes after being wounded by the authorities in the leg. “This intervention prevented it from continuing to attack and prevented the loss of more lives,” he said.
He added that, by presidential instruction, “the immediate strengthening of security in archaeological zones of our country and in the main tourist destinations of the country has been ordered,” with a greater presence of the National Guard, preventive reviews, access controls and reinforcement of surveillance systems.
Asked about the proximity of the Soccer World Cup that will be hosted in the country, The official said that security for the event “is guaranteed” and stressed that such an attack had never occurred in an archaeological zone in the country.
Finally, the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her “solidarity with the relatives” of the Canadian tourist who lost her life “and with all the people who are being treated in hospitals and who experienced this situation yesterday” and stated that the event “is not something that is linked to crime.” EFE
