Cuba confirms dialogue with Washington amid energy crisis and sanctions

The Government of Cuba confirmed a recent meeting on the island with representatives of the United States, in the midst of a context of diplomatic tensions between both countries.

The confirmation was made by Alejandro García del Toro, total deputy director in charge of the US in the Cuban Foreign Ministry, in statements to the official newspaper Granma.

“It is a brilliant matter that, as we have said, we handle with discretion. But I can confirm that a meeting between delegations from Cuba and the United States was recently held here in Cuba.“said the official.

According to the diplomat, during the meeting no strict conditions or defined deadlines were established, in contrast to versions spread by American media: “No deadlines or commanding approaches were established,” he stressed.

The information published in the United States indicated that Washington had requested the releasewithin a period of two weeks, of political prisoners considered emblematic, among them the dissident artists Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and Maykel Osorbo. However, the Cuban Government did not confirm the existence of said ultimatum.

One of the main topics addressed by the Havana delegation was the impact of the energy sanctions imposed by Washington. According to García del Toro, Cuba insisted on the need to eliminate these restrictions:

“The elimination of the energy siege against the country was a top priority issue for our delegation.”

The official described these measures as: “An unjustified punishment of the entire Cuban population and blackmail on a global scale against sovereign states.”

According to official information, mid-level officials from the United States Department of State participated in the meeting on behalf of the United States. while the Cuban delegation was represented at the level of vice minister of Foreign Affairs.
