10-year-old girl found dead in Calhoun County, Alabamain a case that the authorities classify as homicide and that involves another minor.
The victim, identified as Katheryn Bigbee, was located Friday night after officers responded to a home in Piedmont after receiving a report of a missing minor, according to the Piedmont Police Department.
According to Police Chief Nathan Johnson, the operation was activated shortly before 11:00 pm, although it has not been specified which of the minors was initially reported missing.
Another minor arrested for the crime
The authorities reported that, as a result of preliminary investigations, another minor was arrested and charged with murder.
However, police have avoided releasing key details of the case, including the exact location where the body was found, the relationship between the victim and the suspect, as well as the circumstances under which the death occurred.
The public nature of the case, involving minors, has limited the information available to the public.
Investigation ongoing and cause of death unknown
County Coroner Pat Brown told AL.com that The cause of death cannot yet be revealed.
The authorities stressed that the investigation remains active and that they are working to clarify what happened.
“This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved and for our entire community,” Johnson said in an official statement.
The girl was a student at Piedmont Elementary College, an institution that deeply regretted her death.
In a public message, the school highlighted her “cheerful” personality and enthusiasm for reading, describing her as a bright presence in the classroom.
Relatives and members of the community have expressed their pain through social networks, remembering the minor as a “sweet” and “full of life” girl.
Messages of condolences multiplied online, reflecting the impact of the tragedy in this town.
One of his relatives pointed out that the loss has left the family “devastated,” while relatives reiterated that there are still more questions than answers about what happened.
