The Argentine actor Luis Brandoni died this Monday, April 20 at the age of 86 in Buenos Airesafter remaining hospitalized after a cinjury suffered days ago. With his departure one of the most recognizable, beloved and consistent voices in Argentine cinema, theater and television leaves.
For millions of Hispanics in the United States, Brandoni was much more than an actor: he was part of family dinnersmovies repeated over and over again, unforgettable scenes and characters that seemed like they were part of the family. He had the rare ability to make people laugh, move, and also make people uncomfortable with a truth told in time.

His career spanned more than six decades. He went through classics of Argentine cinema, TV hits and memorable comebacks in recent years. It even remained active until the closing.
An actor who seemed close
Brandoni had something difficult to explain: on screen he never seemed to act “from above.” He embodied the exhausted father, the stubborn neighbor, the loyal friend, the common man who fights with life and his own contradictions.
That is why it connected so much with popular audiences and also with several generations of Latinos outside of Argentina.
His friendship with Robert De Niro and the bond that surprised the world
In recent years, Luis Brandoni had added an unexpected chapter to his career: a close relationship with Robert De Niro, one of the greatest figures in world cinema. Both coincided in the series Nada, released in 2023, where they shared scenes and built a chemistry that quickly transcended the screen.
Until now, De Niro did not issue an official public statement regarding Brandoni’s death.although in Argentina many expected a reaction due to the affection he showed towards him in various interviews and promotional appearances.
During Nada’s presentation, De Niro spoke of Brandoni with unusual warmth. He defined him as “a delicious person”, highlighting more than once his human quality and closeness outside of the dwelling.
He was also surprising by admitting that one of the main reasons for accepting a television series—something rare in his career—was the professional and profound respect he felt for “Beto,” as his colleagues and friends have always called him.

The man who showed him Buenos Aires
In several interviews, De Niro said that Brandoni was key in bringing him closer to the Buenos Aires spirit. He appreciated the way he showed him the city, its customs, the food and that mix of humor and intensity so characteristic of Buenos Aires.
For many Argentine fans, seeing a Hollywood star speak like this about Brandoni was a confirmation of something they already knew: that his talent did not need translation.
De Niro also praised her acting work and said he was impressed by the naturalness with which Brandoni built characters. He described him as an “extraordinary actor”, capable of filling a scene without artifice.
It wasn’t just recognition among colleagues. It was the tribute of a world legend to another deeply Argentine legend.

A farewell that hits hard
Brandoni’s death is not just cultural news. For many immigrants, his films were company away from home. On a borrowed screen, a VHS, Latin cable or recent streaming, a familiar voice appeared that brought roots closer.
Brandoni was one of those actors who didn’t need artifice. A look, a pause or a dry phrase was enough to fill a scene. In times of rapid consumption, it leaves something increasingly scarce: current depth.
