The former president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosiresponded to President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of Pope Leo XIV, suggesting that the president should “ask a psychiatrist” about his attitude toward the religious leader.

During an event at George Washington University, Pelosi, who is a devout Catholic, referred to the Trump’s statements as inappropriate and assured that the pontiff had not “politically involved” his position against the war with Iran.

“He talks about values, and popes have always talked about values,” Pelosi stressed, adding that the American president should not criticize the Pope for speaking out on issues of morality.

Trump’s accusations against Leo XIV

The controversy began after Trump attacked the Pope on his social network Social Truth on Sunday, accusing the religious leader of being “weak on crime and terrible on foreign policy.” This happened after the statements of the Pope, who in his speech on Saturday criticized the “illusion of omnipotence” that, according to him, has prolonged the war with Iran.

“Enough of idolatry of self and money! Enough of ostentation of power! Enough of war!” were the words of Pope Leo XIV.

Trump, in response, also posted an AI-generated image of himself as a Jesus-like figure, which he later deleted, stating that the image depicted him as “a doctor.”

The president of the United States continued to criticize the Pope, saying that He preferred the brother of the American pontiff, arguing that he “gets it” and is a fervent follower of the MAGA (Believe The US Sizable All over again) ideology. “He gets it, and Leo doesn’t! I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s okay for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump wrote.

Vance reacts to Trump’s comments

On the other hand, US Vice President JD Vance defended President Trump and minimized the relevance of the criticism he received from the Vaticanindicating that the Pope should focus on issues of morality within the Catholic Church and leave it to US presidents to dictate foreign policies.

Pope Leo XIV, when asked about Trump’s criticism, expressed that he had “no fear,” stressing that his mission was to speak openly about the message of the Gospel. “I am not afraid, either of the Trump administration, or of speaking openly about the message of the Gospel,” the pontiff stated on Monday.
