The minority leader in the Senate, the Democrat Chuck Schumer (New York) confirmed that next week there will be a draft resolution against President Donald Trump’s “war powers”in order to avoid further actions in the Middle East.
“I am announcing that next week the Senate will vote on the War Powers resolution,” Schumer said Wednesday. “Congress must reassert its authority, especially at this most dangerous time. No president, Democrat or Republican, should lead this country into war on his own. Not now, not ever. Republicans will once again have the opportunity to join Democrats and end this reckless war of choice.”
The Democratic leader indicated that The War Powers Act can end “hostilities” in the Middle East, specifically against Iranwhich would force the president to obtain a special authorization for military use (AUMF, in English).
“Trump must end the war now. The only viable solution is a lasting diplomatic solution. A two-week ceasefire, especially one as fragile as this one, is not a strategy, nor a diplomatic solution,” he considered.
Schumer criticized the president for conducting diplomacy from social networksin reference to the threat of “ending an entire civilization,” to focus on building lasting peace agreements.
“Trump must stop posting on social media and start doing the hard work of building lasting peace,” he said. “Trump chose this war; he is responsible for the consequences. Next week, Congress has the opportunity to act to make sure this does not happen again.”
Schumer’s announcement comes a day after several Democratic congressmen called for invoking the 25th Amendment against Trump, in order to remove him from office, an idea that is not advancing among Republicans.

The rise in prices due to the war with Iran
Leader Schumer indicated that the war with Iran has caused gasoline prices to rise in the US, in addition to warning that despite a truce – and not a lasting peace – the costs could extend until August.
The economic effects extend among all families, including Latinos, indicated in a recent report Voto Latino.
“The president is asking American taxpayers to fund a $445 billion foreign conflict while working families here at home struggle to meet their basic needs. Latino families already feel the pressure in supermarkets and gas stationsand instead of providing them with help, this administration chooses to send those dollars abroad,” declared Beatriz López, executive director of Voto Latino. “That decision makes its priorities clear. At a time when families need support, the president puts a costly war before the economic stability of those who are footing the bill.”
The organization listed the chain price increase, due to the increase in gasoline in several states.
“For the first time in four years, The national average price of gasoline has exceeded $4 per gallonwith the largest increases in the states with the largest Latino population,” the report states.
In California the price is much higher, at $5.93 per gallon; in Florida $4.15 dollars per gallon, while in Texas it increased $.78 cents, to add $3.86 dollars per gallon.
This, Voto Latino indicates, can generate food insecurity, due to the 2.4% inflation, coupled with the increase in the costs of fertilizers – which also cross the Strait of Hormuz – and fuel, linked to the conflict.
It is estimated that 9.86 million Latino households could face greater food insecurityin addition to the high cost of electricity, which has increased 24% so far this year.
“Instead of alleviating costs for families, the administration is proposing spending $445 billion that could go toward covering basic needs at home,” the organization notes.
That amount could cover Medicaid for about 56 million Americans for a year; provide childcare for a year to approximately 34 million children, and fund free school meals for approximately 47 million children throughout their primary and secondary education.
“Latino families are not a footnote in this economy. We are its traditional pillar and we will not forget it in November,” the organization said, referring to the midterm election.
