What should have been the start of a new life for a newly married couple ended in separation and deportation proceedings.after agents from the Immigration Service and Customs Enforcement detained a 22-year-old Honduran woman, wife of a U.S. military officer, when she went to an office to process her identification as a spouse in Louisiana.

According to The Novel York Times, Annie Ramos, a college biochemistry student, was arrested last weekend at a military base in Louisiana, shortly after marrying 23-year-old Sergeant Matthew Blank.

“We thought we could drive there, take her to the office so she could get her military ID and activate her military spouse benefits… Instead, they took her away from me,” Blank told the newspaper.

The arrest occurred when the couple was carrying out procedures at Fortress Polk, where the soldier is assigned and was preparing for an upcoming deployment. According to the report, security personnel notified the United States Department of Homeland Security upon detecting that Ramos did not have valid immigration status.

Currently, the young woman remains in a detention center in Basile, Louisiana, along with other women in deportation proceedings.

The DHS confirmed the arrest and noted that Ramos “does not have valid status” and that there is a previous deportation order against him.

Depending on the case, When Ramos was just 22 months old, a judge issued a deportation order in absentia after his family did not attend an immigration hearing.

Despite this, experts point out that, under normal circumstances, people in their situation, married to US citizens, are usually able to regularize their status without being detained.

These measures have been promoted during the administration of President Donald Trump, characterized by strengthening the application of immigration laws even in cases with direct family ties to US citizens.

“I grew up here like any American. This is all I know. My husband and my family are here,” Ramos said in a call from the detention center, according to The Novel York Times.

The case has generated concern among immigrant rights advocates, who warn about the impact of these detentions on families linked to military service, as well as the strict application of deportation orders issued when those affected were just children.
