The Supreme Court granted the request of the Justice Department of President Donald Trump’s administration to overturn appeals court ruling against Steve Bannonformer political advisor to the Republican president.

The petition before the Supreme Court was from the Department of Justice, which reported its intention to dismiss the case and this Monday’s decision paves the way for that conclusion in favor of Bannon, accused of contempt of Congress.

In 2022, Bannon was found guilty of two counts of contempt of the House select committee on January 6which investigated the assault on the Capitol.

Although he had a four-month sentence in the summer of 2024, he continued his appeal, but lost before the appeals court, after which the Trump administration moved to drop the charges against Bannon.

This case is atypicalsince in the cases of people accused by the Department of Justice, it is that office that asks the Supreme Court to maintain its legal processes, but now it was the other way around.

The Committee subpoenaed Bannon on September 23, 2021 to present documents and testimony regarding the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, but he refused, citing President Trump’s executive privilege.

The Supreme Court’s decision stands out, since a federal jury – not a judge – found Bannon guilty of the charges, but they can now be dismissed.
