Have you ever dreamed of appearing in a PlayStation video game? What sounded like science fiction just became staunch. Sony Interactive Entertainment just launched The Playerbasea completely new initiative that gives the most passionate followers the opportunity to be scanned and become characters within PlayStation Studios games. Yes, you read correctly: your face, your figure, youwithin a video game.
What exactly is The Playerbase and how can you get in?
The Playerbase is an official PlayStation community program which allows followers to apply to appear within a PlayStation Studios game through a digital scanning process. It’s not a machine feature that comes with an update, but rather an open call where any player over 18 with a PlayStation Online ID can participate.
The selection process has two rounds. In the first roundPlayStation evaluates your written application based on criteria such as the originality of your writing, how authentic your love for the brand is, your history of interaction with PlayStation (games purchased, hours played, trophies earned), and your specific connection to the game studio in question. In the second roundthe finalists go through a video interview where they demonstrate their passion, their personal history with PlayStation, and what a great story they have to tell.
The winner – because yes, Only one person is selected per game— will be invited to a visual arts studio in Los Angeles where he will spend the day being scanned with cutting-edge 3D capture technology. PlayStation covers travel and accommodation costs for both the winner and a companion.
Gran Turismo 7 is the first game: this is how you will appear in it
The first title of the initiative is Gran Turismo 7the driving simulator from Polyphony Digital. If you are selected, your likeness—that is, your digital similarity—will appear as a limited-time in-game character portraita linked to how other characters already appear throughout the game.
But that’s not all. You are also going to Collaborate with a designer to create your own custom Legend Tag and unique vehicle livery (vehicle livery) that will be permanently added to the game’s Showcase menu. This means that even when your appearance as a character expires, your mark on GT7 will remain forever.
The winner for Gran Turismo 7 is expected to be selected sometime this summer. And PlayStation has already confirmed that this is just the beginning: more PlayStation Studios games are on the way.
In which countries is it available and when does it start?
For now, The Playerbase is available in select markets in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, South Africa and Australia. However, not all countries in those regions are confirmed yet.
What is clear is that to apply you need to have at least 18 yearshave a PlayStation Online active ID and live in one of the participating territories. The application form is available directly through the site company netwhere you can also review the full official rules.
The interesting thing about this program is that It’s not enough to be a good player. PlayStation is not looking for the one with the most kills or the one with the most platinums—although that adds points in the first round. What they are really looking for is an authentic storysomeone who has something genuine to say about what PlayStation has meant in his life. That makes it accessible to any type of gamer.
