President Donald Trump once again fueled speculation about the Republican succession heading into the 2028 presidential elections by ensuring that both Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are “very good” figures with the potential to lead the future of the conservative movement.
The president’s statements came after both officials recently led press conferences at the White House, replacing spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who is on maternity leave.. Vance and Rubio’s public appearances were interpreted in Washington as a kind of advance political rehearsal for the 2028 Republican race.
“I think they both did great. I saw them both. They are very good, they really are,” Trump declared when asked which of the two performed better in front of the press.
Although Trump will not be able to compete for the presidency again due to the constitutional two-term limit, the president continues to dominate the Republican landscape and maintains great influence over who could become the next leader of the MAGA movement.
In recent weeks, Vice President Vance has led several internal polls among conservative voters, while Rubio has gained political visibility after taking a more active role on foreign policy and national security issues.

Vance appeared before reporters for nearly an hour, defending Trump administration decisions on issues such as the conflict with Iran, rising gasoline prices and economic compensation programs targeting the president’s political allies.
The vice president also took the opportunity to appear relaxed and friendly in front of journalists, even joking about the chaotic atmosphere inside the press room.
“I am not a possible future candidate. I am vice president, I really like my job and I am going to try to do my best,” Vance responded. when a journalist questioned him directly about his presidential aspirations.
For his part, Rubio received praise from Republican sectors and some Democratic analysts after his own press conference weeks ago. The former senator from Florida showed a more institutional tone and focused on international politics, particularly on tensions with Iran and Venezuela.

Trump fuels speculation about a Republican ticket
Trump has even publicly suggested the possibility of a joint candidacy between Rubio and Vance, although without clarifying who would lead an eventual presidential ticket.
During a recent dinner in the White House Rose Garden, the president asked attendees who they preferred as a political successor. Both Vance and Rubio received loud applause.
“It would be a perfect formula,” Trump commented on a possible combination between the two Republican leaders. However, he added that it is still “too early” to make decisions.
Despite increasing media attention, both Rubio and Vance have attempted to downplay speculation about 2028. Rubio even previously stated that he would not seek the Republican nomination if Vance decided to run.
However, within the Republican Party, a new generation of conservative leaders is already beginning to take shape who could set the course of the movement after Trump.
With different styles, but aligned with much of the president’s agenda, both Vance and Rubio increasingly appear as the figures best positioned to contest the political control of Trumpism in the coming years.
