A new mother and father were arrested in Pennsylvania after being accused of causing the death of their one-day-old baby. inside a maternity room of a properly functioning facility, Berks County prosecutors reported.
The defendants were identified as Kevin Canaan, 28, and Yennifer Tavarez-Cepeda, 25, who face charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a minor.
According to the Berks County District Attorney’s Office, the alleged abuse occurred on May 2 inside the Tower Effectively Studying Scientific Institution, in West Studying, Pennsylvania.
Deepest doctor found baby in critical condition
Authorities indicated that agents from the West Virginia Police Department went to the facility after receiving an alert regarding suspicions of child abuse.
Health workers located the newborn in a state of medical emergency inside a private recovery room where he remained with his parents.
The baby was later airlifted to Penn Explain Hershey Scientific Heart for specialized neonatal care, but died the next day.
An autopsy performed on May 5 concluded that the minor died from “multiple traumatic injuries.” The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.
According to researchers, specialists at Penn Explain Hershey Scientific Heart reported that the injuries were not related to the birth process and were consistent with physical abuse.
Authorities maintain that the baby was under the exclusive supervision of his parents when he suffered the injuries and that neither of them alerted the top doctor about what happened.
The investigation also concluded that The injuries were inflicted in a short and clearly documented period, after several routine checks carried out by workers at the properly being facility.
The defendants were arrested after charges were filed.
The criminal complaint was filed Tuesday by the Berks County District Attorney’s Field of Business.
Shortly after, Studying resident Kevin Canaan and New York native Yennifer Tavarez-Cepeda were detained and taken to the Berks County Sheriff’s Processing Center.
On its website, Tower Effectively Being Studying Scientific institution notes that it was previously recognized by US News & World File as a high-performing facility in maternity care for uncomplicated pregnancies.
