The king of Spain will travel to Guadalajara (Mexico) on June 26 to witness the soccer match that the Spanish team and Uruguay will play in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, as Zarzuela sources announced this Monday.
Felipe VI thus responds to the invitations sent by the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and by the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, through letters addressed to the head of state.
The monarch has already confirmed to Sheinbaum and Infantino that he accepts their invitation for that World Cup match, which will be held in the Mexican city of Guadalajara, they have added from Casa Actual.
In the group stage of the World Cup, La Roja will first face the Cape Verde team, then Saudi Arabia and finally Uruguay.
Last March Sheinbaum confirmed that he had sent an invitation to Felipe VI to attend the World Cup and explained that similar invitations had been sent to all the countries with which Mexico maintains relations.
The news came to light in the middle of the process of normalization of diplomatic relations with Spain.
The sending of the letter occurred before the king publicly acknowledged that during the conquest of America there was “a lot of abuse,” statements that Sheinbaum later described as a “gesture of rapprochement,” although he noted that progress still needs to be made in historical recognition.
Then, in April, the president of Mexico traveled to Barcelona to participate in the summit in defense of democracy, organized by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez. EFE
