In recent years there has been debate about the benefits acquired in the event of a possible return of Liga MX and MLS clubs to Conmebol competitions. This has been news that has resonated strongly with a view to the development of football in both Concacaf countries. But reports indicate that this return seems distant.

The information was disseminated by the Mediotiempo portal. Journalist Rubén Rodríguez presented details about the alleged return of Concacaf clubs to Conmebol tournaments. The information clarifies that there is nothing concrete.

There is no negotiation that directs Mexican soccer back to South America, this after consulting well-informed sources in Concacaf.“, they indicate from the Mexican portal.

The possibility of this union arose much more strongly after Televisa/Univision will announce the return of the transmission of the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana on their screens. The agreement with the medium was established from 2027 to 2030.

This was the predominant reason that led to the resumption of the conversation about a possible return of the clubs from Mexico and the United States to these competitions. But in Concacaf they have prioritized the growth of regional tournaments such as the Leagues Cup and the Concacaf Champions League.

Mexican clubs in South America

During the period between 1998 and 2016, Mexican clubs actively participated in the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana. Clubs such as Cruz Azul, Chivas, Tigres, Pumas and the Tuzos del Pachuca held large tournaments that showed the level of Aztec football.

Among the best participations of Mexican teams in these tournaments stands out the championship of the Tuzos del Pachuca in the 2006 Copa Sudamericana (they beat Colo-Colo in the perfect), the runners-up in the Copa Libertadores of Blue Cross (2001 vs. Boca Juniors), Chivas de Guadalajara (2010 vs. Porto Alegre) and UANL Tigers (2015 vs. River Plate); in addition to the runners-up in the Sudamericana of the America (2007 vs. Arsenal de Sarandí) and the UNAM Pumas (2005 vs. Boca Juniors).
