The Republican-led Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security committees released their legislative proposal for the Peace Reconciliation bill. $72 billion to fund the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) and the Border Patrol until 2029.
With this proposal, Republicans do not need Democratic votes for approvalwhich they could achieve after last month the Senate and the House of Representatives approved the process to advance the special budget allocation.
“Senate Democrats refuse to vote on whether to spend a single dollar on securing our borders or enforcing our immigration laws, even against the most violent illegal immigrants,” said the Republican. Rand Paul (Kentucky), chairman of the National Security Commission. “To ensure funding for these vital functions, my committee will vote later this month to provide the necessary funding.”
That is to say, By the end of May, Republicans will have approved more budget for ICE and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency, on which the Border Patrol depends, for immigration actions, including operations against undocumented immigrants.
Democrats have refused to support this budget project by demanding substantial changes in the way immigration detentions are carried out: preventing agents from wearing masks, avoiding violence in arrests, not carrying out detentions in homes and other private areas without an executive order, among others.
The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Republican Chuck Grassley (Iowa), also defended the idea of his party members.
“Democrats set a negative precedent by shutting down DHS for 76 days, forcing brave law enforcement officers and their families to lose several paychecks,” Grassley justified. “Sadly, Democrats’ irresponsible shutdown of DHS showed that they are still the party of open borders and defunding the police.”
It stands out that Republicans accuse Democrats of wanting “open borders”, but there is no Democrat who claims that they want such a policy, but they reject the way in which immigrants are detained, even violating their constitutional due process.
“Republicans will not allow our country to go backwards because of the Democrats’ radical, anti-law enforcement agenda,” Grassley added. “The Senate Judiciary Committee is taking steps to provide certainty for federal law enforcement and safer streets for American families.”
If the Republican calendar advances as indicated, by the end of May, or at the latest by the beginning of June, the president donald trump would sign the budget project.
What would the budget for ICE be used for?
The Homeland Security Committee project includes $7.5 billion “to hire, train, pay and equip the top Homeland Security Investigations through fiscal year 2029.”
The Judiciary Committee’s text would allocate $30.73 billion to hire, pay, train and equip ICE’s deepestincluding officers, agents, investigators, lawyers and deepest support.
Both texts indicate the budget plan until 2029, that is, one year after President Trump’s second term ends.
$22.57 billion would also be allocated to hire, train, compensate and equip CBP’s deepest personnel.
$3.5 billion dollars are considered to improve border security, “including air and maritime operations and efforts to combat drug trafficking, as well as security monitoring of people entering or leaving the country.”
There is a billion dollars to the Secret Service to improve the security of the White House complex, this in relation to the construction of the ballroom.
Democrats reject proposal
Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (New York) criticized the budget proposal.
“Republicans live on another planet than American families. Republicans saw families drowning in debt and decided what they really needed were more raids and a ballroom for Trump,” he said.
