The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, This Tuesday he highlighted national sovereignty as the central axis of his Government and issued a direct warning to any external actor, pointing out that “no foreign power is going to tell us Mexicans how to govern ourselves,” amid pressure from Washington to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking in the country.

During his speech at the commemoration of the Battle of Puebla, which takes place this May 5the president took the opportunity to link the foreign interventions of the 19th century with the present, but stressed that the defense of independence is still valid.

The people of Mexico are not wrong when it comes to defending national sovereignty“said the head of state, while insisting that “nothing can be above the sovereignty and interests of the people of Mexico.”

Sheinbaum recalled that the invasions of Mexico were justified with legal arguments from abroad, since they were supported “in all cases on legal assumptions from the perspective of the invader,” he noted.

The president also took the opportunity to point out that those who seek foreign intervention in Mexico “are destined for defeat” and even sent a clear message to the United States.

“To our neighbors, to the United States, we say: let us remember the great moment of relationship between (the presidents) (Benito) Juárez and (Abraham) Lincoln. The recognition of the Republic and the support for Juárez is one of the most laudable actions of our historical relationship,” concluded Sheinbaum from Puebla (center).

However, he made it clear that the bilateral relationship must be based on mutual respect and non-intervention, reiterating that Mexico will maintain a firm position in defense of its self-determination.

We are free, like the indigenous people who went to the mountains during the conquest to preserve their right to organize as they decided. We are a people who love their freedom, their independence, their sovereignty and we are always willing to defend it. Freedom and independence are justice and sovereignty,” stated the Mexican president.
