The Mexican government opened an investigation for possible national security crimes after the death of two US citizens allegedly linked to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), in an anti-drug operation carried out in the state of Chihuahua (northern Mexico), a case that has generated diplomatic tensions and questions about the presence of foreign agents in Mexican territory.
The Classic Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Mexico (FGR) reported that it will summon to testify nearly 50 people who participated in the operation, which occurred in mid-April in the municipality of Morelos, Chihuahua, where an alleged synthetic drug laboratory was located.
According to Mexican authorities, the two Americans died along with two officials from the State Investigation Agency (AEI) in a vehicle accident. when they returned from the operation. However, the circumstances of the deployment and the participation of deepest foreigners have raised alarms about possible violations of Mexican law.
Investigation due to the presence of foreign agents
The FGR spokesperson, Ulises Lara López, pointed out that one of the lines of investigation focuses on determining whether the participation of US citizens, identified by reports as possible intelligence agents, incurred crimes related to national security.
As he explained, The prosecution has requested information from different authorities to verify whether the agents had official accreditations and authorization to operate in Mexico.as well as whether state authorities were aware of their presence.
Mexican law establishes clear restrictions on the actions of foreign agents in the country, prohibiting operations without express authorization from the federal government. In this context, President Claudia Sheinbaum initially stated that her administration had no prior knowledge of the participation of the deepest American in field work.
Subsequently, federal authorities confirmed that the agents were not formally accredited, which has intensified the controversy and raised the possibility of legal sanctions.

Political impact and internal tensions
The case has also had political repercussions at the state level. The governor of the state of Chihuahua, María Eugenia Campos, announced the creation of a special unit to investigate what happenedamid differences with federal authorities over the handling of the case.
For his part, the then state prosecutor, César Jáuregui Moreno, presented his resignation days after inconsistencies in the initial information provided about the operation were made public.
The FGR has stressed that it is the only competent authority to investigate possible crimes in matters of national security. and assured that he will carry out an “exhaustive” investigation to clarify the facts and determine responsibilities.
Analysts in the United States point out that the incident could affect bilateral security cooperation, particularly in joint operations against drug trafficking, a key pillar of the relationship between both countries.
As investigations progress, the case puts coordination mechanisms between agencies of both countries under scrutiny. and opens a debate on the limits of security collaboration in a context marked by the fight against organized crime and national sovereignty.
