The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio will travel this week to Rome and the Vatican with the aim of holding high-level meetings with Pope Leo XIVamid growing diplomatic tensions arising from the war in Iran and recent political disagreements between the White House and the Holy See.
According to the State Department, Rubio, who professes the Catholic faith, will meet with the Vatican leadership to discuss the situation in the Middle Eastspecifically the conflict with Iran, as well as issues of common interest in the Western Hemisphere, including Latin America.
The trip, scheduled between Wednesday and Thursday, will also include meetings with Italian government officials to address security and strategic coordination issues. Among them stands out Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, considered a key ally of Washington in Europe.

Attempt to reduce diplomatic tensions
The visit occurs at a delicate time for relations between the United States and the Vaticanfollowing President Donald Trump’s comments directed at the pontiff. Trump publicly criticized Leo XIV for his positions on the war in Iran, as well as his views on migration and global security.

Rubio, who has assumed a key role in American diplomacy, has been tasked on several occasions with qualifying or explaining the president’s positions.
