Alex Zanardi passed away this Friday, May 1, surrounded by his family and loved ones. The 59-year-old former driver left a big mark on the world of sports. Alex Zanardi’s talent was indisputable, but his ability to excel made him a legend. Zanardi won four paracycling gold medals at the Paralympic Games.
Alex Zanardi’s career in elite sport began in the 90s. The former Italian driver defended a couple of cars in Formula 1. Zanardi was the first driver for Williams and Lotus during his stay in the top automobile category.
But Alex Zanardi would also have a stint in the CART series (today known as the Indy Car). The driver born in Bologna won two championships (1997 and 1998). But three years after his last title, Zanardi suffered a serious accident in a race at Lausitzring, Germany. The pilot lost both legs.

The resilience of Alex Zanardi
The accident did not stop Alex Zanardi. Although he could no longer compete in motorsports, The Italian decided to design his own prostheses and take up his new discipline: paracycling (hand bicycles).
This was a major change in Alex Zardini’s career. Quickly, the former Formula 1 driver established himself as one of the best contenders in his category. Zanardi had the chance to be at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

Alex Zanardi conquered four gold medals and two silver medals in his two participations in the world’s greatest sporting event.
Second accident
In June 2020, Alex Zanardi was doing exhibition practice in Tuscany, Italy. The former Olympic champion lost the grip on his bicycle in a curve and It collided directly with a truck that was located in the opposite lane.
This accident caused Alex Zanardi several brain and facial injuries. The Italian underwent four neurosurgical and maxillofacial interventions to reconstruct his face and improve his neurological status.
After a year and a half in hospitals, Alex Zanardi was able to return home. The former Formula 1 driver constantly carried out rehabilitation work and his improvement was gradual. But after five years of returning home, Alex Zanardi dies, but leaves behind a great life story full of success, improvement and teachings.
